The Esplanade: Theatres on the Bay

You might be more familiar with the Sydney Opera House in Australia, but when you're in this part of Asia, there's this another sight to behold and shouldn't be missed.

The Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay is Singapore's national performing arts center, and it's also one of the world's busiest.

Officially opened on 12 October 2002, this architectural and cultural icon, with its striking twin shells, sits on six hectares of prime waterfront land by Marina Bay, part of Singapore's civic district comprising other heritage, arts and entertainment facilities. It has year-round programs in its state-of-the-art venues that include a 1,600-seat concert hall, a 2,00-seat theater, two small studios, outdoor venues for performances as well as the arts related Esplanade Mall. The 3 years in the running Mosaic Music Festival has been held here since 2005.

Likewise, the oddly shaped Esplanade is often called "The Durian" by Singaporeans, although its design was not based on the fruit.

Singapore, being only about 83 miles from the equator, has a tropical climate with uniformly high temperatures and rainfall all year round. The design for the Esplanade required a lot of glass to make it visible to the outside world during the day, while at night giving people a stunning view over the city. The challenge was to design an essentially glazed building yet protected from the sun and heat. The architects devised a fixed cladding system consisting of glazed steel space frame with triangular aluminum shield. These texture sunshade skin has given rise to a number of nicknames such as petals, fish scales, fly's eye. But Singaporeans have seemed to have settled calling it the durian, the sweet local fruit known for its spiky appearance and noxious smell.

The Esplanade aims to be a performing arts center for everyone, and its programs cater to its diverse audiences. Its program line-up spans all genres to encompass music, dance, theater and visual arts, with a special emphasis on Asian culture. Recent musicals include Sound of Music and the currently playing The Phantom of the Opera. The King and I will be shown in this coming August.

Don't forget to drop by. I'm quite sure you will enjoy the sight!

what i love about the theater in esplanade is that there's no phone signal in the theater (at least thats what i notice). that way, no annoying phone calls when plays are happening.

I would love to go see a production at this place. It seems like it would be amazing inside. I have missed out on a lot of opportunities to travel and experience more theatre. This looks like a place worth adding to my list.
