The Majestic Merlion

One of the national icons of Singapore, the Merlion was first designed as an emblem for the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) in 1964 – the lion head with a fish body resting on a crest of waves.

The lion head represents the lion spotted by Prince Sang Nila Utama when he re-discovered Singapura in 11 AD, as recorded in the "Malay Annals". The fish tail of the Merlion symbolises the ancient city of Temasek (meaning “sea” in Javanese) by which Singapore was known before the Prince named it “Singapura” (meaning “lion” (singa) “city” (pura) in Sanskrit), and represents Singapore’s humble beginnings as a fishing village.

Built in 1972, the the eight-meter Merlion used to stand at the mouth of the Singapore River to welcome all visitors to Singapore. With the construction of the Esplanade Bridge, the Merlion had to be transfered to its current location at Merlion Park, next to One Fullerton and overlooking the Marina Bay. It's been there since 2002.

There are currently 5 recognized statues of the Merlion. Do you know where they are? Be sure to find them all when you visit Singapore!
