It's the time of the year when Singapore is flooded with mooncakes. The Mid-Autumn Festival or Mooncake Festival in Singapore is also a time when some of the fanciest hotels in town seem to be competing for accolades in producing the best mooncake, or rather, best-selling mooncake. The mooncake is the traditional food of the festival, of which there are many different varieties. Typical mooncakes are round or rectangular pastries, measuring about 10 cm in diameter and 4-5 cm thick. A thick filling usually made from lotus paste is surrounded by a relatively thin (2-3 mm) crust and may contain yolks from salted duck eggs. They are usually eaten in small wedges accompanied by Chinese tea.
Modern mooncakes differ mainly from traditional types most vividly in the type of fillings that are offered. You can have coffee, chocolate, different types of nuts, fruits and vegetables. What would you want inside your mooncake?
