You'll only realise how important some things are only when they're gone.
It's been a while since Ma Ling luncheon meat was pulled out from supermarket shelves here in Singapore. It's seems like eternity for die-hard Ma Ling fans, whom most grew up eating the canned luncheon meat. Those who are used to munching slices of Ma Ling in their Nasi Lemak or economical beehoon are feeling the loss. Some have included the return of the luncheon meat in their Christmas wishes, while some have reported X-Files-style "sightings". Some are not as optimistic and just simply turned to other luncheon meat brands like Tulip (Denmark) and Spam (USA).
Ma Ling luncheon meat is about as famous in China as Spam is in the U.S. Shanghai-based Maling Food Co. is investigating allegations that a shipment of its meat was contaminated with the banned antibiotic nitrofurans, which is thought to cause cancer. The export ban to Singapore covers all Ma Ling brand canned-food products which includes meat, fruits and vegetables.
The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) ensures that food processing plants will be able to meet its food safety standards, which are in line with international standards. It's only then that the exports of canned pork products will resume.

So will Ma Ling luncheon meat ever see the light of day again?

I love Maling Luncheon Meat. It is one of my weekly meal on the lunch list. I have switched to other brands to stop that curb. Sobz..
Hi this is a little off-topic, but I'm replying to the comment you left on my blog MarketTreasure.com 's entrecard performance report.
I was unable to purchase advertising from your entrecard widget because all of your spots are taken.
Contact me whenever you have an available spot and I will take it.
I've always loved MaLing when I was little (though I already stopped consuming it for years now) poor MaLing.. another dead-on controversy.
Personally, I didn't find Ma Ling to be that delicious, even though I ate it since I was a kid, I've preferred Spam more.
I used to like Spam a lot, but I don't really eat canned meat products much these days since I turned into a "pseudo-vegetarian". Just more careful with my food choices and more mindful about my health. I'm not young anymore, hehe.

I thought the news mentioned that it is the company who made the decision to halt all its exports to Singapore. I doubt Ma Ling will be back soon. Seriously, they have got a much bigger market back home then the pathetic 4.5+ million of Singaporeans here.
How'd you make the Label Cloud?
hmmm bakit d2 sa pinas meron pa rin tinda maling? fave ko rin yan! =)
No interest in maling, whatsoever. ;)

Mahilig pa naman ako sa maling. Halos magsawa na ako dyan dati kasi inarawaraw ko yan. Haha.
Maligayang pasko mula sa Pilipinas!
poor maling
i love Ma-Ling, there's something "unique" in its taste that Other brands can't match (please tell me they don't include fetus' oil or duck meat in it).
reached here via the technorati fave train .. Good site and very interesting .. I will do this favorites experiment soon..
Learning the ropes as I progress
Happy New Year! Wishing you all the best of 2008.
Ah, fond memories of eating Ma Ling for breakfast back in the Philippines. Hmmm... are the luncheon meat served here in the hawker places still Ma Ling (or maybe another brand, but I still call these canned meat Ma Ling). ^_^!
Thanks God the authorities acknowledged the presence of this contaminant before more damage can be done to the people in Singapore. onlinework
I love maling too
I remember one time, the maling was baned due to fmd. But i still love ma ling. mmmmmmm..
It sounds like the Spam of Asia! We would go crazy in the US without our Spam.
This brings me nostalgic memories of my Maling days.=) Back then, MALING had always been a food entree in our meals no matter how health conscious our family is. Even with friends' meals, it's surely one of the faves. Maling with mayonnaise as spread for ready-to-go sandwiches are always handy..and yummy. I love SPAM and TULIP too.
Times have changed and our family, with me as the semi-serious health buff :D lectured on them and to friends about MSG content of almost a lot of foods! Goodness! A lot of our preventable sickness nowadays are brought forth by this 'essence of flavor' culprit. To give a litany of these diseases would be long but among which are; obesity and migraine (which I have). Anything with MSG will make you want to eat more. That's the way with MALING--addicting. It rhymes, hey. :D
But yes, it is missed. But I am glad ppl have become more aware about their health . Refrain from pre packed food guys!!!
I still see some'sightinggs' of these Maling in the Philippines' sari-sari(convenience) store.I ahd the hunch it may be fake. :D
Anyway, God bless!
Have a nice day!

Sounds like you have the same fondess to Ma Ling as I have to Spam. I haven't had it in years, but can still taste it after all this time. Good post. Thanks.
I forgot to add that when I was in China, I do remember that I had Ma Ling. It was definitely great tasting! Just thought I'd let other readers know that if you can grab a can or more of Ma Ling, don't wait on it... GET IT right away! hehe, thanks again for the interesting read!
